Joy Laking

Joy Snihur Wyatt Laking has been a professional painter for the past fifty-three years after graduating from the University of Guelph with a major in Fine Art.  She has had many solo exhibitions including Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax N.S., Mount Alison University, Sackville, N.B. and The Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington, Ontario.

In 1989 she had a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia which was toured regionally for a year. Joy lives in Portapique, Colchester County. She continues to paint and write full-time. She operates the Joy Laking Gallery, at 6730 Hwy 2, Portapique Nova Scotia.

“I have been capturing the beauty of Nova Scotia for over fifty years in watercolours, acrylics, oils, and words. In addition to studio painting, whenever possible I paint on location. It is an exhilarating challenge to set out, find a subject, and complete an entire painting in four to seven hours. These paintings are loose, spontaneous and depict the tides, the lighting, and the moment. Besides painting throughout the Maritimes, I have also painted recently in India, Ghana, Sri Lanka, and Portugal.”
